Polycarbonate can form a lightweight translucent building envelope. Its value is often the way it admits diffuse light while giving the wall a continuous appearance. It is available in different sheet and panel constructions, and should not be described as a universally fireproof or earthquake-resistant facade. In facade design, selection depends on the complete system and the building’s requirements.
Solid sheets and multiwall panels
Solid and multiwall products have different optical, thermal and structural properties. Thickness alone does not determine suitability. Compare the manufacturer’s span limits, supports, connections and intended applications. A sheet supplied for a canopy is not automatically an appropriate substitute for a tested facade panel system.

Daylight without uncontrolled glare
Translucency can distribute light, but colour, surface treatment and panel build-up affect the result. Review glare, views and privacy from the occupied space. Consider orientation and internal use rather than assuming more transmitted light is always better. Thermal performance depends on the whole assembly, not the material name.

Movement and weather protection
Polycarbonate expands and contracts with temperature. Fixings, edge clearances, seals and supports must accommodate the chosen product’s movement. Check which face has UV protection and follow requirements for cutting and closing panel ends. The manufacturer’s technical FAQ illustrates the importance of compatible sealants and installation details.
Fire, impact and maintenance
Assess fire performance from the exact product and system classification required for the project. Impact resistance does not establish non-combustibility. Plan cleaning with compatible products, inspect joints and allow for access or replacement. Surface scratches, ageing and exposure should be considered alongside initial appearance and cost.
Choosing a suitable application
Polycarbonate may suit an envelope where filtered daylight is part of the architectural brief. Compare it with alternatives using functional facade design principles. The original polycarbonate sheet reference shows a product category, but retail examples cannot replace project-specific system documentation.
